The Flat Five is a five piece jazz combo that originally formed from the culmination of after-school rehearsals at Foothill High School. The band is composed of three Foothill High alumni, one Enterprise High alumni, and one member who currently attends Red Bluff High. All four alumni are currently pursuing various degrees in music at the university level and come from the institutions of the University of the Pacific, CSU Fullerton, CSU Chico, and University of Nevada, Reno.

The instrumentation consists of an alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, piano, bass, and drums. The band plays a wide assortment of jazz from straight-ahead swing to fusion to bossa nova. All of these influences lead the band to search for its own sound and inspire the never-ending search for musical expression.
