Alison, (my daughter) had her last day of work and then grabbed an early morning flight from Portland to San Diego. The plane made a stop in Sacramento and (having driven from Redding) I joined her and we flew the rest of the way together. My two sisters picked us up ( Clover having arrived a few days earlier from Texas) and we drove to a Mexican restaurant for dinner on the patio. Don (Pat's husband) joined us. Great way to start our vacation!

The second day, we four girls drove to Santa Monica, we visited the home of our grandparents and then drove to the J. Paul Jr. Getty Museum. Since we did not have a lot of time this day, we simply wandered around the grounds...

and through garden with plans to return the next day.

We found our hotel quickly changed and took the special bus to the Hollywood Bowl. What a night, we heard Hugh Masekela and then Wynton Marsalis with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Both were so enjoyable.

We had grabbed some dinner from the vendors on the way in, as this was new to us, unlike the two couples in the row in front of us. They had an incredible picnic spread out, ranging from wine, candles, cheese, bread, salad to cake and coffee for dessert. Apparently, they have season tickets and knew "how" to do it right!

The following day we went back to the Getty Museum and visited the art! It was so amazing to see the marvelous masterpieces. I specially like two of Monet's and Van Gogh's "Irises".

Later that afternoon, we drove to Seal Beach (a darling beach town) where we met a couple of Pat's friends and enjoyed an fantastic dinner. After dinner, we walked along the pier.

The next day, we drove to Newport Beach did a little sight seeing and had lunch before driving back to San Diego. We picked up Don and drove out to meet high school friends for dinner. (You may notice a theme here of "eating great meals") So fun to visit with them.

The following day, Clover's flight home was canceled so we all took the day to
relax and cooked a meal at home. After dinner, we laughed ourselves silly playing
"Statergories".

Clover was able to fly the next morning, and after wards, we three made our way to La Jolla Beach. The weather was lovely so we went walking along the beach enjoying the sights and then...

shopped in the cute stores there. Sadly, the next day, Alison and I returned to the heat of Redding. Besides seeing her brother, he spent her time visiting old friends here and then was soon flying back to Portland. I wonder where we will go next year? So glad Alison is with us to drive, read signs for us, and help us remember what we need to remember.

We all came from different destinations.
Due to an early flight, Viv and I came a
day early and spent the night at our friend
Kathy's (who lives close to the airport).

First day was a whole day of flying!

riser roommates were able to see a few more.

The next day I visited the exhibit hall and listened
to some jazz groups. First one was a trio, who's
name I can not remember, but very talented.

They also played for Monica Mancini
(Henry's daughter). Great to hear her
stories about her father and she is a
wonderful singer.

Sax man Dave Koz also performed.

Our hotel has a special tradition (read the
story above).

The following day we heard Marlo Thomas
speak about her life growing up 'funny'!
Poor picture, but she was amusing to listen to.

Later that evening we went to a very cool
Cuban restaurant.

The food was exquisite!

As my late husband would say:
"Rolled on the thigh of a virgin".

The last performance was too good to be real!
First, Richie Havens performed, sounded
just the same as 30 years ago.

Next up was Judy Collins...as clear
and pure as ever! And she touched
our heart strings and eye-ducts.

The headliners: Crosby, Stills and Nash
did not disappoint! So amazing!
Steven Stills was absolutely stellar on the guitar!

After the show...we returned to the Cuban Restaurant
to watch the salsa dancers. Very fun!

State of the Reunion

Junior high friends, Lynette, Linda, Ann and
me (Claudia) reunite for a wonderful
weekend in the Sacramento area.

First, three of us join together in Davis.
We had a great meal on the patio of the Bistro.

Next, we got a lovely room at the Hyatt.
Used AARP card for excellent deduction.

Nice "free" breakfast there the next morning.

We arrive at Ann's house.

Ann taught Linda and me how to make
some jewelry. It was so much fun and
she had so many do-dads to work with.

Since Ann is so creative and artistic,
we enjoyed looking around her home.

This is for all who like to
make fun of us for attending.

Our picture was on their web page for a whole year!

We saw Rod Stewart. Our first convention
is Boston.

Jana Jacoby is a Redding gal who plays
with him.

Wynonna performed in D.C. our second convention.

There we also saw Natalie Cole.

Third convention...Vegas Baby!

Gloria Estefen was electric.

Faith Hill put on a wonderful show.
Besides the performers, there are football field size
exhibit halls, and daily speakers to choose from.
Speakers such as: Regis Phibin, Maya Angelou,
Al Roker, Whoopi Goldberg, Shirley MacLain,
Judy Collins, Joan Rivers, Bob Newhart, and
some politicans among many others.

So now you may want to sing the following song!

This year's looks to be just as great!

Sisters' Summer Trip 2010

SISTERS' SUMMER TRIP 2010

June 17, 2010
My older sister, Pat, flew from San Diego to Sacramento where, she met up with my twin
sister, Clover, who had come from east Texas. They took the shuttle van to Redding and I met
them with a sign and balloons. (Unfortunately, there were "technical" problems with my camera and so the above is a later staged photo). That night since they had a full day of travel, we simply stayed at my house, had dinner, chatted, and watched some old Powers family videos. Experiencing again our great times with our wonderful parents. We are so fortunate to have had such a fun and loving family.

The next day I wanted to show them some of my favorite things about Redding. So I took them to The Sundial Bridge and Turtle Bay Arboretum, both amazing places to see and enjoy. (again, my camera fail me).

Then off to lunch, where my son, Chris, joined us, with a bouquet of flowers for each of us. It was near a camera shop, so I took in my camera...and discovered that I had forgotten to replace my memory card (it was still in my computer). Guess, I need a new memory card for MY old brain!

Home again, for a short rest before off to Chris' work, where he is a bartender, for a drink before dinner. Next, dinner at an outside patio where my favorite jazz duet was performing. Then, we still had time to go outdoor The Turtle Bay Cafe for a nightcap and more jazz from the dynamite trio of WE 3...Tony, Bruce and Cleveland. My sisters were very impressed by the quality of music here in Redding. Great local talent!!

Saturday morning, we were preparing to leave on our trip when Chris brought his dog, Ogee, over to see his Aunts.

Eventually, we got started and we took in the lovely sights of Whiskeytown Lake. Then the scenery continued to thrill us as we drove west on 299 to the coast.

Next day, (6-20-10) we drove to Patrick's Points.

we drove north.
Spent the night at Bandon with our room overlooking
the ocean. Slept to the sound of the waves.
Awoke to find a curious seagull watching us.

We joined Kendal (Don's sister) and her
dog for a walk on the beach. Very windy!

Left the coast and drove on a lovely road over
to Portland. We were anxious to see Alison and
Cousin Jane arrived from North Dakota.

Then we when downtown to Portland City Grille
for drinks and a wonderful view of the city and its
seven bridges.
After the drinks, we when to Sushi Go-Round
for dinner. Jane and Clover had never had sushi
before. One of my favorite places to eat in Portland.

A must see in Portland is the Rose Garden.
Nearby is a lovely Japanese Garden, but alas,
our time was limited.

Alison told us about the double and
occasion triple decked bicycles in town
and here we spotted one double decker.
While in Portland we were able to connect with
our cousin Jack (who lives in nearby Vancouver and
works in Portland at a hospital as a supervisor of
electricians). He joined us for a visit at the girl's hotel.
Sadly, Clover had to leave, but the rest of us gals
went to another Portland tourist sight...

At some time, we also fit in a trip to the
famous Powell's Bookstore. (no photos)

All have left, but me. I went with Alison as
she bought tickets for the upcoming
Timbers' Soccer game.
Alison and I drive from Portland back to Redding.

An incredible time was had by all.

Busy June 2010

Cool rainy days brought in June. They were a help, as I bustled around preparing the yard and house for three different sets of guests that month.

First, two friends of one of my BEST friends were meeting each other in Redding. So I invited them to stay overnight here. One gal, I had met before and knew a little. Along with two of my high school friends, I once stayed at her house in Ashland. The other lady lives in Jamaica and I'd also stayed at her house when visiting there, however, she was out of the country at the time.
When they arrived, the wanted to see the Sundial Bridge and Turtle Bay Arboretum so we did
that first. After that we came back for a dinner I'd made. I had already had plans to attend a concert, so I gave them the choice of coming with or staying at my place and relaxing. They chose the latter. When I returned they were out on the patio enjoying some conversation and wine. Since my guest room has a Jamaica theme...I had to take their photos in my rasta cap with
dreadlocks.

Following this, was a small gathering for a retirement luncheon. It was a salad potluck...so I really only had to do the house, drinks and I planned some special surprises. I was GREAT fun
to see a lot of my previous co-workers and other retirees. Everyone had a good time!

A couple days later, my two sisters arrived on a Thursday. We would then leave on Saturday
for our trip up the Oregon Coast. See the next blog entry.

I think that since this is mostly a journal for my kids to have someday (and I post a lot of photos), I've let Facebook somewhat take its place. So I will try to pay more attention to this blog. I do have two other ones that I am slowly getting together. They are even more for just my family.

Family Wedding

The wedding would not be until Sunday, but we went down to Santa Clara on Friday, (so that Chris could spend time with his girlfriend--who lives down there) and I could go to the Outdoor Community Christmas Concert that my nephew George (trumpet player) was performing in. Before the performance, Mike and Jack had prepared a wonderful clam chowder dinner for all. Then we walked to the community center to celebrate Christmas with the local community. It was so great to be part of the outdoor celebration. What a fun evening. George’s school performed and then alumi from the school also performed. Afterwards, we walked back to my niece Bonnie’s house (where I was staying) and had snacks and visited with Mike’s family members.

The next day was the day before the wedding. Bonnie and her friend had plans to go to a Victorian Home Tour, so I joined them. We visited several old Victorian homes in the area, and enjoyed ourselves. We also stopped for lunch. That evening, Bonnie, had not yet decided on what to wear to the wedding...so we went shopping. She found a top we all liked and so we went home and joined Mike, (her husband) in a game of Scrabble.

My nephew, (on the Hastings' side), Steve was getting married on Sunday evening Dec. 6, 2009. Interesting wedding, since the entire family was not invited. There have been some riffs in the family and so if to avoid “drama” certain members or more distant members were not invited. My adult children, even though they are the same generation, are over ten years younger and had not spent time growing up with Steve, so it was understandable that they were not invited.

I was allowed to bring a guest, and my son, wanted to go, so I chose him. My daughter, would not have been able to go, even if invited, as she lives in Portland and would have to work the next day.

Sunday, the day of the wedding. My son, Chris arrived (in his new suit), and we all prepared to go. The wedding was held in a gorgeous St. Joseph’s Cathedral Basilica in San Jose. Then we all moved to the reception at the Corinthian Event Center for a lovely dinner and an all night open bar, with dancing after. So much fun even though a couple of the nephews who had RSVP‘d that they would come, did not show.

My Youngest Turns 30

Since it was a special birthday, I wanted to do something unique for him. My daughter who lived in Portland, on her 30th birthday, had received a poster of “30-deer” (standing for $30 bucks) from me and “30 pebbles” (standing for 30 ROCKS) from my sister! So for my son, I decided to give him a Money Tree with 30 dollars on it. First, I needed a mazanita branch. My friend Patty,had some on her property. Of course, it wasn’t easy, we had to hike up a hill through stickers and under barbwire. Finally, I was able to select several branches that might work. When I got them all home I selected the best one for my plan. The next step was to remove the leaves and spray paint it gold. I also, had to find a pot and fill it with plaster (which of course, I did not purchase enough plaster, and had to return to the store for more). I also, did not realize HOW heavy the plaster would be. Now with the branch gold and firmly stuck in the plaster in the pot, I began the tedious job of rolling and tying on 30 one dollar bills. When I was finished, they did not look quite right so I again tied them, this time with a really shiny tinsel type of ribbon. Lastly, I added some moss at the bottom to cover the plaster.

The day before his birthday, he would be at work and I felt that would be a lot more fun than giving it to him one on one. So my friend, Viv, drove me to his place of work so I could hold the MONEY TREE. When we got there (camera in hand) he was not yet there. However, he finally showed and got a kick out of it. I also handed him a card with more money.

In addition, to my present, I’d emailed many friends and asked them to send him birthday cards...hoping he would receive 30 or more! He called me and said who are these people?

His friends, also gave him a party after work. They had made him a big sign and a poster collage (which I had contributed photos to). So he had a FUN time turning 30.

On 10-21-09, the girls picked me up.
After the mandatory trip photo with sign,
we headed to the airport in Sacramento.

It happened to be Mary's birthday.
After stopping in Corning to get a card and
gift from her sister, her twin brother, Joseph,
and his wife met us with celebratory cupcakes.

arrived at our hotel, the Plazzao.

It was a huge, lovely ornate place.

We grabbed some quick breakfast
and hurried to the opening session.

It was a long line as there were 9,000+ participants.

Some of us went on to other sessions, some
went to the exhibit hall, and some took a nap.
Then we joined together for dinner at
Wolfgang Puck's POSTRIO for dinner.
There we had a wonderful dinner before
the evening concert.

The evening concert was Gloria Estefan.

She was amazing and we gathered at
the stage edge to dance.

At the end, she invited Perez Hilton &
his mother (on the right) up on stage
to dance with her dancers.

Gloria was very friendly and shook
hands with the crowd. Viv, even got
a handshake.

Day 3...
We chose our own sessions to attend.
Viv and Mary got up early and went to
exercise with Martina Navratilova.
Although, I've been on Facebook for
over a year, I attended Facebook 101,
to see if there was something new to
learn. It was a huge class, so obviously,
the AARP crowd is now on Facebook,
much to the horror of our children.

We joined together later, to hear
travel reporter, Peter Greenberg speak.
He was very informative and an
excellent speaker.

Later, in the exhibit hall, Patty found
an inflatible cow at the Vermont,
Cabot cheese counter. She talked
them into giving her one of the cows.

Music instrument exhibit, got the crowd
involved is making music. Very fun!

While getting ready for dinner,
Viv and Mary told a funny story that
had us all in stitches!

It was a very funny and interesting show.

We had to wear plastic ponchos, as
we were in the second row.

Portland in Autumn

Recently, my nephew Peter need to go to Portland for a non-profit job fair. He invited me to go along since my daughter lives there. He would see her new home andwe would stay with her. Thus, began our "wild" road trip! We happened to leave Redding on the worst storm day of the season! We had to drive on windy, windy (two different words), rainy roads. The huge trucks were hard to pass. So often I got stuck rightin their spray with a hard rain coming down and sharp curves coming often. I believe that Peter regretted that he let me drive that leg. He finally took over in Ashland.
That evening Peter met up with his friend, Rob (Yuba) and we all got together for dinner.
We ate at the Rogue a popular Portland place.

Next day, Alison went to school and Peter went to his non-profit job fair. I hung out and later, Peter and I met up for lunch. We got picked up groceries and Peter cooked an amazing dinner. Afterwards, we went to one of Alison's favorite bars. Her friend Clara joined us, as she
herself has spent time in non-profit.

There is a famous food cart in Portland that has been written about in the NY Times. It is very popular and different. They prepare their potato fries in a different way and serve them with gravy and special chunks of cheese. MMMMM....good!

Next day we headed to a special neighborhood where Beverly Cleary lived and wrote the Ramona Books Series. We saw the school named after her and we visited a park where
there are statues of Ramona, Henry and Ribsy (the dog), characters in her books.

Wed., Aug. 26

Mary, Viv and Patty came by to pick me up at 7:00 p.m. I had a big pink “New York or Bust” sign sitting by my suitcases. We packed into Mary’s car, as she had offered to drive to the Sacramento Airport. We got to the Sacramento airport by 10:00pm. We eventually boarded the plan and departed at ll:59 p.m. Those long “Red Eye” flights are a little tough. But we were able to sleep some.

Thurs, Aug. 27

Arrived 8 am New York time. Leah, Viv’s oldest daughter, had sent a car to pick us up. She has lived and worked in NYC for two years. She was to be our guide for the week, and what a wonderful week she gave us!

We arrived at the Benjamin Hotel – couldn’t check in until 3 pm. They took our bags, we freshened up. Leah dropped off Marie, Viv’s second daughter, who had also flown in from Southern California. Leah went to work and we went nextdoor to a diner for breakfast. I asked for salas for my eggs and was brought sausage. Eventually, I got something that somewhat resembled a green salsa.

Since we could not yet get into our rooms, we took a Blue Line Bus Tour – Downtown Manhattan - $44. It was a beautiful day in the high 70’s. We sat on the upper level– couldn’t really hear well, but information I understood was good and we saw a lot of sights. However, I did nodded off a couple of times between taking a number of random photos. When we finally got in our rooms we all took naps! Venus Williams stayed in our hotel. (She was here for the U.S. Open)

We did eat lunch one day from a street vendor,
gyros and they wonderful.

At 5:30 p.m. Leah met us downstairs. First, we went to dinner at
5 Napkin Burger, then we walked to Jersey Boys at the August Wilson Theater. Outstanding performance! Great energy! Fun to learn something about the group The 4 Seasons. After the show we went to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck at Rockerfeller Center. We were way up high and could walk all the way around and had spectacular views.

Friday, Aug. 28

Drizzling out! Took umbrellas. Walked to Starbucks for a quick bite. Walked on to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. I lit a candle for all who I love that have passed away and one candle for all I love who are living (especially my dear friend, Donna). We walked to Leah’s work, at the Asia Society, 725 Park Ave. Beautiful flats lined the streets. We had a little tour of her building, and as we approached her office she asked us to be quiet because people were working! Viv’s phone rang – it was the David Letterman show giving her instructions to get tickets. Needless to say – she wasn’t quiet! Very “Jazzed” and animated. A 20 min. phone call later, and we had the tickets.

If we had taken our bus tour one day later,
that would be us in those rain ponchos.

Ah, the wonderful food.

Leah’s friend from Redding, Danika Swason, joined us for lunch at Candle Café. One of the best meals I had in New York. Afterwards, we walked to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. So many wonderful things to see...really too much to do in one day. But it was amazing!

Next we took the subway to Leah’s apt. in China Town. Fun to see where a “real” New Yorker lives. Walked to Grand Schezwan, Patty’s niece, Raegan met us there. We had Chinese Hot Pot. It was a big boiling pot of broth/hot sauce cooking on the table ( it reminded me of “stone soup”!) You throw in lotus flower root, soy skins, rice noodles, lamb, beef to cook. Then take it out. Interesting, very good! They served warm beer, but gave you a glass full of ice to pour it into. Quite good. I noticed some Chinese customs at another table were sweating and wiping their brows with towels...spicy! Afterwards, to cool the palate we walked to Rice to Riches after for a rice pudding dessert. Many flavors, great signs and sayings. Very clever, very modern! The place was packed! Leah and Marie went back to her place and Raegan guided us back to the subway.

Sat., Aug 29

Light rainy day. We took a cab to Gemma’s for brunch. Raegan was already there, Marie & Leah came later. Iris, (Mary's friend) came later, she took bus from Washington DC. Then we were off in two cabs for Battery Park. We had tickets for Ellis Island. Fun ferry ride, rain had stopped. We passed the Statue of Liberty, what a sight in real life! At the island we saw a 30 minute movie about the history of Ellis Island. Mostly the rooms were galleries and not samples of the real place.

Afterwards, we got cabs to Pier 17, South St. Seaport. We bought “discount” tickets for Mama Mia that night ($94 ea.). We ate dinner at the nearby Uno Pizzeria. Then we caught the subway to Times Square. Iris got off at Penn Station. We literally RAN 8 (Long) blocks to Winter Garden theater. (Envision these 60 year old women running and weaving in and out of the crowds). We made it without a minute to spare. Great production! Leah had seen it before and thought this one was better!! Luckily, we were able to WALK back to hotel. There we shared wine in our room.

Sunday, Aug. 30

Mary and Viv went in to St. Patrick’s and sang a hymn. Amazing organist “shook the house”. Went to Starbucks for “breakfast”. Leah & Marie came up on subway. We walked (and took photos along the way) to Central Park took horse and carriage rides through the park. Great way to see the park. Noticed the interesting poop catchers behind the horses, good idea, helps keep the streets of NYC clean.

Went to Columbus Circle, Time Warner building/mall. Had light lunch on Bouchon. Took a subway to Brooklyn. Subway “performers” – panhandlers. Another performer was Viv. When the train lurged, she fell into a nice gentlemen's lap. Luckily he was very sweet - but didn't tip her for her "lap dance".Off to Brooklyn on Music Barge with Voxare Quartet. We were in a small room on the barge and could feel the waves and see the movement of the buildings in a distance. I prefered to listen with my eyes closed. The music was wonderful. My favorite was Viladi’s Four Seasons. Next, we enjoyed ice cream in a park area in front of River Café. Beautiful day.

Next we walked down to Ground Zero...not much to see, but I had to go there.

Took a cabs to Frying Pan, a restaurant with music on a pier and boat. You can sit anywhere you want pier or boat, it was packed. The sunset looked lovely over the river towards the city. Later, we took cabs back to hotel. Viv & Mary had their free drink tickets (from room delay), Patty & I had mojitos in Emery Bar (adjacent to hotel). We were approached by “John from San Bernardino”. Said he’d played tennis in Redding. Didn’t believe him at first. Then he told story of 911 – including someone from Redding named Chris Wilson whose suitcase ended up in rental car of terrorists. He knew story of Stephanie Isaacs (his officiating bud for the US Open) and how phone calls were made from her home to terrorists. Patty knows this Stephanie...6 degrees of separation.

Monday, Aug. 31

This was our only day to sort of sleep in, but at 9:00 a.m., loud hammering and drilling began. When we looked out our window to see the cause we saw workmen at our window standing on a scaffolding. That was the end of the sleeping in. Mary had gotten up early and gone to see the Today Show. Later, Patty joined her at American Girl doll store. We all met up for brunch at Terrace at St. Bart’s. It was a lovely outdoor restaurant and it was a beautiful day!

Next we were off to go to the David Letterman show taping. On the walk there, we saw them starting to film 30 Rock with Tracy Morgan at NBC studios. Then we waited in line at Letterman. They herded us in to lobby, insisted we stay together, checked ID, then split us into two groups. We were told to come back in 45 minutes to “yellow line” for Letterman. There were young “Cheerleaders” on the sidelines pumping everyone up for the show. Dave, however, had NO interaction with audience. Good monologue and the top 10 was basically Cheney jokes. Howie Mandel, talking about his OCD, and there were diving dog tricks. Also, young music group. Paul Schaffer’s band played during the commericals and were really good.

After show Viv and her girls went to the US open, Patty went to have dinner with her niece, Raegan. Mary and I went to Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Jazz Center. We had dinner and then listened to the Walter Blanding Quintet. They were excellent and Walter brought up his mom to sing a couple of songs...she blew everyone away! We heard that Wynton Masalis was going to perform during the second set...so managed to stay and did not have to pay for the show again. Wynton Marsalis did sit in for one tune...what a treat. Though photos not very good. Nice walk back to the hotel. Perfect last night in Manhattan.

Tues., Sept. 1

Alarm went off at 7:00 a.m. and by 9:30 we were on our way to the airport in a van. We changed planes in Long Beach and arrived safely in Sacramento. Hit the road to Redding, when Val Ann, Mary’s sister, called just before we got to Corning. We stopped and had dinner at Casa Ramos (8:30) with her, her husband Tony, 2 church ladies and Anastasia, exchange student from France. Then on to Redding, arrived about 10:00 p.m.
